About Mathias Philip
Mathias Philip is a Copenhagen-based painter whose work moves between abstraction and figuration. His paintings emerge from personal observation, fragments of memory, gesture, and atmosphere that resist clear narrative but suggest a human presence beneath the surface.
Working conceptually yet intuitively, Philip explores identity as something unstable and shifting. Forms appear and dissolve, figures are hinted at rather than defined. The work occupies a space between recognition and uncertainty, inviting the viewer to project their own experience into the image.
Informed by his parallel practice in photography and moving image, his paintings carry a subtle awareness of framing and light. Yet where the camera captures, Philip’s paintings reconstruct, slowing perception and allowing ambiguity to remain unresolved.
